About us
Karen HIggins is a dedicated and experienced dog trainer who has been transforming the lives of dogs and their owners since 2015. Her journey began in the rescue world, where she witnessed a heartbreaking cycle: many dogs were adopted only to be returned to shelters due to unresolved behavioral issues. These problems often worsen with each change of environment, leaving the dogs with fewer chances for a stable home. Determined to break this cycle, Karen pursued a career in dog training to address these challenges and help dogs become well-adjusted companions.
Karen started her training career in Phoenix, Arizona, where she worked tirelessly to rehabilitate dogs and educate their owners. In 2018, she moved to Colorado and took her passion for dogs to the next level by opening a comprehensive Doggy Daycare, Boarding, Training, and Grooming facility. This business quickly became a trusted resource for pet owners, blending care and expertise to meet the diverse needs of dogs and their families. After six successful years, Karen sold the business in 2024 and relocated to Nashville, Arkansas, with her husband Mark and their Sanctuary Dog Cabin Ranch Sanctuary Inc.
Dog Cabin Ranch Sanctuary is a haven for dogs who have run out of options and time. Many of these dogs come to Karen with behavioral issues, often through her training work. At the sanctuary, they thrive in the expansive green spaces and structured environment; Karen’s true passion lies in dog socialization, which she views as essential for creating balance and routine within a "pack." Her approach is rooted in understanding canine behavior and fostering harmonious relationships between dogs and their owners.
As a certified Canine Good Citizen Evaluator, Karen designs her classes to help dogs and their owners achieve the skills needed to pass both the Canine Good Citizen and the Canine Good Citizen Advanced Tests. She is also trained in E-collar training, a method she believes is often misunderstood but highly effective in achieving reliable off-leash behavior. She can help you help your dog to become a faithful companion who is well behaved and well trained. Her thoughtful and compassionate approach helps dogs reach their full potential while strengthening the bond between them and their humans.
When she’s not training dogs, Karen can be found with her husband, Mark, caring for the residents of Dog Cabin Ranch Sanctuary, ensuring they enjoy the love, care, and stability they deserve. They love their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and are thankful every day that He has brought them to continue their journey in beautiful AR. Karen’s mission is to provide every dog with the opportunity to thrive, through training, socialization, and structure. With nearly a decade of experience and a deep love for animals, Karen continues to impact the lives of dogs and the people who care for them.
